Mixed Media Art : The Relationships and Tales of Khao Chae

Abstract

This article, Mixed Media Art: The Relationships and Tales of Khao Chae constitutes a component of a dissertation in Doctor of Fine and Applied Arts Program, aims to synthesizes concepts and processes for visual art creation by examining the cultural object Khao Chae through Assemblage Theory, the Narrative from Below, and Materiality.
The study aimed to highlight local ways of life and stories from communities often excluded from mainstream history. This approach illustrates how the Mon community navigates negotiation, adaptation, and change through interactions with external influences. The creative process included: 1) combining historical objects, such as the Wat Phra Chetuphon inscription and community narratives, to generate new meanings and contextual relationships with Khao Chae; 2) using photographs and video to enhance the cultural significance of the area and shared Thai-Mon memory; and 3) installing artworks below eye level to reflect horizontal thinking and emphasize local narratives.
The synthesis of creative approaches in this research demonstrates that these processes are applicable to contemporary art practice and can facilitate dialogue among art, ethnic communities, and society.
