A Study of Orthography and Basic Skills for Communication in Higher Education Thai Textbooks of Yunnan Minzu University

Abstract

This article presents an analytical study of orthography and basic skills for communication in higher education Thai textbooks of Yunnan Minzu University, books one and two. The study shows that the contents presented in the basic Thai textbooks of Yunnan Minzu University are divided into two parts. The first part is on orthography which provides details about consonants, vowels, tone markers and spelling while the second part presents basic skills for communication that include listening, speaking, reading and writing. The listening and speaking parts emphasize the pronunciation of words and simple sentences used in daily life. The reading part focuses on the practice of reading words based on the spelling rules, sentences and short passages on culture, and reading for main ideas. The writing part focuses on the practice of writing words and different types of sentence used for daily communication.
