The Consideration of Fake News by Using Kesaputti Sutta’s Principle

Abstract

Nowadays information is valuable and important. However, there is both true and fake information; especially news, people always encounter both real and fake news. Therefore, whenever receiving any news, it is necessary to consider whether it is true or fake news as the first priority. Buddhism has criteria for considering this by using guidelines from “Kesaputti Sutta”. In this article, analyzing the Kesaputti Sutta’s principle was done, and the result reveals the guidelines for considering fake news in four steps: 1) Using 10 principles of Kesaputti Sutta to consider that news first, 2) considering with the principle of Yonisomanasikara if believing that news or doing any action according to the news will lead to merit or bad deeds, 3) considering with the principle of Paratoghosa by consulting with other experts as a second opinion, third opinion, etc. to receive more information and additional comments, and 4) using experiences that have been accumulated throughout your life to help filter the news, together with the informational and opinions obtained form the Yonisomanasikara and Paratoghosa as stated in items 2) and 3) again before deciding whether it is true or fake news.
