The Spiritual Value of Phoenix Patterns in Chu Culture of Wuhan for Creative Cultural Product Design

This research aims to study the evolution of phoenix patterns in lacquerware from Chu culture through the analysis of historical origins and artistic styles. It seeks to uncover the spiritual meanings and unique elements of the phoenix patterns in Chu culture, to extract their artistic values, and to apply these cultural and spiritual elements in the design of creative cultural products. The research methods employed include document research, field research, and creative research. Through the analysis of phoenix patterns in Chu lacquerware art, three main shapes of the phoenix patterns were identified: the complete single shape, and three abstract shapes: the “S” shape, the “C” shape, and the “arrow” shape. The study concludes that the spiritual values of the phoenix patterns in Chu culture can be summarized into three key points: 1) Reflection of life and the sun, 2) Reflection of openness and auspicious visions, and 3) Reflection of truth, goodness, and beauty. In terms of design, the principles of composition were used to design patterns that reflect the spiritual values of the phoenix patterns. These were applied to the design of three creative cultural home products: a table lamp, an incense holder, and a vase, using culture as the foundation of the design. The artistic identity of the phoenix patterns in Chu culture is conveyed through the shapes and patterns of these products, presenting spiritual values such as fire, the sun, life, good fortune, wealth, unity, and goodness. Applying the phoenix patterns to household products serves to preserve and promote Chu culture, transmitting the spiritual values embodied by the phoenix patterns to contemporary audiences through creative cultural products. This approach effectively reflects the importance and value of the era of phoenix patterns in Chu culture.
