Abstract

This research aims to study the relationship between Cizhou kilns and Taoist aesthetics. The documents referenced in this study are based on ceramic products symbolizing the Cizhou kiln during the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1270) and the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1271 - 1368), as well as all 81 chapters of the “Tao Te Ching.” This research employs a mixed methods approach, including literature reviews, questionnaires, surveys of kiln remains, and studies at the China Cizhou Kiln Museum to gather necessary data. The research analyzes the shapes, patterns, meanings, and concepts that reflect the aesthetic context of traditional Cizhou kiln products. The study found that ceramic wares with patterns associated with Cizhou kilns are closely related to the Taoist aesthetic concept of “simplicity through the white floor that appears with black patterns.” This indicates a direct connection between the Cizhou kiln and Taoist aesthetics. The findings highlight the artistic value of Cizhou kilns, which can inspire innovations that build on traditional practices, strengthening the knowledge base for further development and application of insights gained from Cizhou kiln research.
