Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of attitudes and organizational culture on Thai employees' motivation and English communication competence. The research methodology was a quantitative research with survey method using questionnaires to collect data. The sample consisted of 385 employees working in private companies in the Bangkok metropolitan area. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the data. Inferential statistics such as Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) were used to test the hypotheses.

The research results showed that employees’ attitude towards English communication had a direct positive influence on English communication competence at a statistical significance level of .001. Organizational culture had no direct influence on English communication competence (p-value = .214), but had a direct influence on motivation to use English at a statistical significance level of .001. Motivation to use English and employees' attitudes showed a positive relationship with a statistical significance level of .001. The analysis revealed that motivation served as a partial mediator between attitudes and English communication competence and as a complete mediator between organizational culture and English communication competence. These results suggest that the development of employees’ English communication competence should focus on building motivation in conjunction with positive attitudes and an organizational culture that supports the use of English.
