ESSENTIAL SKILLS FOR SECRETARIAL WORK IN MODERN ORGANIZATIONS: A CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS
Keywords:
Secretarial Work, 21st Century Skills, Digital Skills at Work, Modern Organizations, Conceptual SynthesisAbstract
The evolving organizational work environment in the digital era has significantly expanded the role of secretarial work from traditional administrative support to a more integrated professional function requiring a diverse set of competencies. These include professional, digital, communication, interpersonal, and ethical skills. While existing studies on work-related skills often focus on the workforce or professions in general, systematic analyses of essential skills specific to secretarial work within modern organizational contexts remain limited. This conceptual article synthesizes relevant literature on 21st-century skills, digital skills, and organizational competencies to develop a conceptual framework of essential skills for secretarial work in modern organizations. The synthesis results in a six-dimensional framework comprising: 1) professional skills, 2) digital skills, 3) communication skills,
4) emotional and interpersonal skills, 5) thinking and management skills, and 6) ethical and professional conduct skills.
The proposed framework highlights the role of secretarial work as a key organizational mechanism that supports coordination, decision-making, and effective operations. The findings provide practical implications for human resource development, curriculum design, and professional competency enhancement for secretarial roles in contemporary organizations. Additionally, the framework may serve as a foundation for future empirical research on secretarial skills and professional development.
