Chinese Documents in the Ming and Qing Dynasty related to Thai History during the period of Ayutthaya

This study aims to revisit, translate, and analyze historical documents of the Ming and Qing dynasties referring to Thailand during the Ayutthaya period. Documents ranging from official to private accounts were analyzed using a historical research method. The results show that Chinese documents are essential for the study of Thai history because they thoroughly record events and offer unique narratives. The most prevalent topics appearing in almost all documents are the tributary system of Thai-China relations, customs and protocols of Thailand paying tribute to the Chinese emperor, the geography of Thailand, as well as accounts of customs, traditions, and social characteristics. Chinese documents dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties are of immense value to historians for they provide a unique insight into the interactions between Thailand and its neighboring lands.
