Abstract

This work aimed to analyze the linguistic forms indicating metaphors in 12 poems that were qualified at the last round of the 2016 ‘Phaan Waen Faa’ Award Literature, and 2) to benefit the values of metaphorical use as a tool for effective communication in an analysis of conceptual projections and categorization of abstract target domains. The conceptual metaphor theory in cognitive semantics was employed. The findings found that there were 12 target domains transferred by various source domains namely 1. [PEOPLE], 2. [PRESTIGE], 3. [RIGHTS], 4. [KNOWLEDGE], 5. [THOUGHT], 6. [RULE], 7. [DEMOCRACY], 8. [POLITICS], 9. [HONESTY], 10. [LAND], 11. [NATION], and  12. [POLITICIAN] which enabled us to elaborate the understandings in comparison. Moreover, the numerous critiques of democracy that were construed by poets can be supportive of democracy in Thai society through poetic patterns.
