The Evolution of Decorative Stupa in Battambang from the 19th Century to Mid-20th Century

The objectives of this research were 1) to study the style, background and development of the stupa style in the city of Battambang during 24th to 25th Buddhist centuries, and 2) to understand the relationship between Siam and Khmer in Battambang through the architecture of the Pagoda. This research was an analytical study employing a research methodology from the field of art history. It gathered information from primary documents which were available in Thailand and Cambodia. Fieldwork was conducted to collect and survey data in the area by recording images and interviewing key people. It was found that the early decorative stupa in Battambang was strongly related to those of early Ratanakosin Art, especially during the reign of King Rama III. This influence of Thai art probably came with the political influence of Thailand which was trying to expand its power at that time. Later, the style of the decorative stupa of Battambang started to develop into its own local style, creating the unique characteristic of Battambang architecture.
