The Relationship between Gender, Education, and Training on Digital News Ethical Consciousness of Mass Communication Students

This research investigates the relationships between gender, educational institutions, and the ethical consciousness in digital news reporting among mass communication students who have undergone professional training and who have not. A mixed-methods approach was employed, consisting of quantitative data from 425 students selected via multistage sampling and qualitative data from 25 students selected via purposive sampling, totaling 450 participants. Data were collected by using questionnaires and in-depth interviews, and were analyzed using t-tests, ANOVA. The results show that gender, type of educational institution, and participation in professional training influenced students’ ethical consciousness which was at a medium level. When considering consciousness in each aspect, students who had undergone training exhibited higher levels of ethical reasoning, particularly in critical thinking during information gathering and news presentation. The qualitative data revealed that students emphasized daily life rather than social behavior, accuracy, verification of sources, and avoidance of sensational or misleading contents and inappropriate images which attract attention but could lead to a claim. The findings offer valuable insights for universities and media organizations to design curriculum and professional development programs that strengthen ethical awareness in future media professions.
