Abstract

The purposes of this research article were to: 1. compare tourists’ perceptions of the tourism potential of the Chiang Mai–Chiang Rai Highway (Highway 118) based on different personal characteristics; 2. compare tourists’ perceptions according to different travel behaviors; and 3. investigate guidelines for developing tourism corridor potential to promote sustainable economic development. The study employed a Sequential Explanatory Mixed Methods Design. Quantitative data were collected from 400 tourists using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and one-way analysis of variance. Qualitative data were obtained through in-depth interviews with 17 key informants and analyzed using content analysis.

The findings revealed that the overall tourism potential of the Chiang Mai–Chiang Rai Highway (Highway 118) was perceived at a high level. Tourists with different personal characteristics and travel behaviors demonstrated significantly different perceptions of tourism potential. In addition, the development of tourism corridor potential should focus on five key components: attraction, accessibility, amenity, accommodation, and activity, together with the promotion of community participation, place identity, and sustainable tourism governance. The study generated a new body of knowledge, namely the HSTC Model (Highway 118 Sustainable Tourism Corridor Model), which explains that sustainable tourism corridor development requires the integration of the 5As framework with community participation, place identity, and tourism governance mechanisms. Such integration enhances destination competitiveness, promotes equitable income distribution, strengthens local communities, and contributes to sustainable economic development at the regional level.
