THE IMPACT OF CORRUPTION ON DEMOCRATIC DEVELOPMENT IN BANGKOK
Keywords:

This research aimed to examine the relationship between corruption and the development of democracy in Bangkok, investigate the problems associated with corruption, and propose guidelines for corruption prevention in Bangkok. A mixed-methods research design was employed. The quantitative sample consisted of 400 residents aged 18 years and above in Bangkok, with the sample size determined using Yamane’s formula. In addition, 17 key informants were purposively selected for the qualitative component. The research instruments included a questionnaire and a structured interview form. Quantitative data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis.
The findings revealed that corruption was moderately associated with the development of democracy in Bangkok, with a statistically significant correlation at the 0.01 level (r = 0.489). Furthermore, corruption factors collectively predicted 81.60% of the variance in the development of democracy. These findings indicate that corruption is closely linked to the democratic development process, particularly in terms of transparency, accountability, and public participation. In addition, corruption results in the leakage of public resources, reduces the efficiency of urban administration and development, and undermines public and investor confidence. Therefore, Bangkok should promote good governance measures, with an emphasis on transparency, the use of technology to enhance monitoring and auditing efficiency, opportunities for public participation, and rigorous supervision and follow-up. These measures can contribute to the concrete prevention of corruption and the sustainable development of democracy. The findings of this study can serve as supporting information for formulating good governance policies and anti-corruption measures in Bangkok.
