Research Competencies of Vocational Education Teachers in AI Era

This academic article proposes a research competency framework for vocational education teachers in an artificial intelligence world and provides an example in the redesign of an existing study to align with research competency needs. Synthesis revealed six competency domains, i.e., 1) research knowledge and design competency, 2) information retrieval and knowledge synthesis competency, 3) data collection, data analysis and AI-assisted research competency, 4) innovation and research utilization competency, 5) research publication competency, and 6) research attributes and ethics in the AI era. To illustrate the application of this framework, a manuscript originally developed in 2017 was submitted to ChatGPT for
revision to align with contemporary research practices and the six competency domains. The results revealed several recommendations for modernization. The recommendations which emerged from this stage were adopting a mixed-methods research design, using analytical academic literature search and analysis tools such as Semantic Scholar, including learning analytics that probe for frequent participation to perform project-based learning behaviours, and conducting thematic analysis of reflective journals or interview data. Moreover, the results suggested extending the research outcomes into a Statistical Literacy Development Framework for TVET students. The results also highlighted that researchers in the age of AI are ultimately responsible for the validity of data, analyses, interpretations, and conclusions generated with artificial intelligence assistance.
