This paper aims to study the musical composition techniques of the overtures of Rajabhat University group as a guideline for the creation of an overture for the university entitled “Fuengfa Dvaravati”. The research employed a qualitative method for this creation. The results of the study are as follows. 1) The study of the musical composition techniques of the university overtures revealed some common features—only one root melody was used, 1–4 melodic scales were used to create the melodies, a musical bridge was used to harmonize the movements of the melodies, the styles were that of a controlling melody and a regular format where the melodies could be freely arrange, and Louk-lor-louk-kad and overlapping of melodies were also found. 2) The creation of Fuengfa Dvaravati overture was an extension from the root melody of a song—Rajabhat Nakorn Pathom March. It was found that the key characteristics when composing the song were gracefulness, strength, and sweetness. The musical form was in 3 movements: the first and the second movement consisted of 6 beats of Probkai rhythmic pattern, and the third movement consisted of 16 beats of Mon rhythmic pattern. The scales used in the song were Piang-or Bon, Java, and Piang-or Lang. The movement of the melody was of the controlling melody, and the regular format with Louk-lor-louk-kad and overlapping of melodies.
