Abstract

This article aims to analyze problems found in Thai–Japanese translation through texts translated by Thai students majoring in Japanese language, and to provide suggestions for Thai–Japanese translation courses. In this research, the target group was asked to translate short Thai articles into Japanese. After analyzing 76 pieces of translated texts, 719 errors were found. The top three types of errors were vocabulary-related (61.19%), grammar-related (36.02%), and sentence-level-related (1.40%) respectively. The first three most common issues were vocabulary-related, which were the misspelling of words or using wrong Chinese characters (20.72%); unnatural use of vocabulary (19.05%); and using words that convey different meanings from the source texts (13.91%). The next three most common issues were grammar-related, which were misuse of particles (11.54%); not using or the misuse of tenses and aspects (8.21%); and inappropriate sentence endings (4.45%). Based on these results, a guideline for conducting Thai–Japanese translation courses can be suggested as follows: the teacher should emphasize the differences between Thai language and Japanese language regarding choice of words, and the importance of checking the meanings and the usage of vocabulary. Furthermore, the teacher should illustrate the common problems of translating Thai into Japanese, so that students can initially recognize those problems.
