THE ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION SKILLS DEVELOPMENT BY USING SHORT TALES READING EXERCISES WITH COLLABORATIVE STRATEGIC READING (CSR) TECHNIQUE FOR PRATHOM SUKSA 5 STUDENTS OF BANHUAILA SCHOOL BAN HONG DISTRICT, LAMPHUN PROVINCE

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to; 1) To create and evaluate the suitability of reading comprehension training using cooperative reading (CSR) techniques with English short stories for Prathom Suksa students and 2) to compare the English reading comprehension skills of the students before and after learning using the short story reading practice with the CSR technique for Prathom Suksa 5 students at Ban Huai Hla School, Ban Hong District, Lamphun Province. The population was 16 for Prathom Suksa 5 students at Ban Huai Hla School in the second semester of the 2023 academic year, selected using purposive sampling. The research instruments included 1) a short story reading practice using the CSR technique for Prathom Suksa students, 2) a lesson plan for the CSR technique combined with English short stories for Prathom Suksa 5 students, and 3) a pre-and post-test on English reading comprehension skills. The content was summarized and rewritten in formal English style while maintaining the original meaning.

The results of the study were as follows: 1) The appropriateness of reading comprehension exercises using cooperative reading (CSR) techniques combined with English short stories for Grade 5 students overall is at a very appropriate level. 2) The students’ English reading ability after using the supplementary reading comprehension exercises by collaborative strategic reading (CSR) was significantly higher than the ability before using the supplementary reading comprehension exercises by using collaborative strategic reading (CSR)  techniques at the .05 level.
