Abstract

This research aimed to: (1) design a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) process to promote democratic leadership among students in an ethnically diverse boarding school, and (2) evaluate students' democratic leadership characteristics. The sample consisted of 30 Grade 9 students enrolled in Social Studies (S23101) at Rajaprajanugroh 60 School, Chiang Mai Province, selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments included: (1) an evaluation form for the essential components of the PBL process, (2) a learning activity plan evaluation form, and (3) a democratic leadership assessment. All instruments were validated by experts using the Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC). Data were analyzed using the mean and standard deviation.

The findings revealed that: (1) the developed PBL process comprised six stages: identifying real-life problems, collaborative discussion and hypothesis formulation, self-directed inquiry, collaborative knowledge construction, presentation and shared decision-making, and reflection and self-assessment. The overall appropriateness of the learning process was rated at a high level (Mean = 4.42, SD = 0.24), while the learning activity plans were rated at the highest level (Mean = 4.92, SD = 0.11). (2) Students' democratic leadership was at the highest level overall (Mean = 4.63, SD = 0.13), indicating that the PBL approach effectively enhanced participation, rational thinking, respect for diversity, and shared responsibility among students.
