A Study on the Role of Ancient Chinese Phonology in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

Abstract

In teaching Chinese as a foreign language, Chinese historical phonology plays an important role in explaining to students the phenomenon that rhyme is no longer used in modern Chinese, help international students to grasp the development of the different pronunciation for some special words, to enhance the sense of belonging of foreign students with Chinese dialect background when learning Chinese, etc. However, the integration of Chinese historical phonology into teaching Chinese as a foreign language may encounter challenges from teachers, students, curriculum arrangements and other aspects. Therefore, the author proposes to incorporate Chinese historical phonology into the curriculum system of TCSOL major to better realize the new generation of teachers to master the basic knowledge of Chinese historical phonology; use story teaching method to explain some phonological knowledge needed in the study of poetry to foreign students.
