Western Cultural Influence in a Thai Musical play Entitled “TukkaTa Yodrak”

Abstract

          This article is a part of the thesis on musical theater entitled Tukkata Yod Rak. This study was conducted with the purpose to examine influence of Western culture in the musical Tukkata Yod Rak.Qualitative research methodology was employed, including data collection through relevant documents, interviews with experts, observations and the synthesis and analysis of the gathered information. The findings were then summarized and presented as descriptive analysis.

          Research results showed that Tukkata Yodrak musical play has been significantly influenced by Western culture in all aspects, as follows: 1) Structural Influence – as the play was adapted from The Enchanted Doll, a work by an English author. 2) Performance Style Influence – the performance could be found reflecting inspiration from Tableau Vivant technique, where performers stand still like painted figures instead of actively portraying dolls. 3) Performance Elements Influenced by Western Culture - the following elements were observed: (1) Gestures and movements – Inspired by Western opera, particularly the act of clenching and releasing hand gestures. (2) Music – Influenced by Western melodies, leading to the creation of Thai songs with Western-style tunes. (3) Costume design – as could be observed in the musical Tukkata Yodrak, the costumes reflected western influences, featuring Raj Pattern jackets, hats, socks, and shoes. Women also wore silk blouses and dresses tailored in a Western style, clearly showcasing the integration of Western culture into Thai Society. (4) Stage and scenery – the stage design resembled Western theater, incorporating scene transitions and set changes to enhance realism. These components contributed to the uniqueness and novelty of the play and positioned Tukkata Yodrak, a contemporary musical with potential for international recognition. Furthermore, it serves as a guideline for enhancing and preserving the performance style of Thai musical theater while ensuring its continuity and cultural conservation.
