Thai Interjections Usage of Gen Y Group on Social Media

Abstract

This research studied the use of Thai interjections by Gen Y Group in on Social Media. The objectives are to study forms and trends of the use of Thai interjections. The data were collected from the messages posted on Instagram by a Gen Y named @naya_44. The results revealed two types of Thai interjections usage as follows:

There were six forms of Thai interjections used which were (1) interjections with exclamation marks ( ! ), (2) interjections with no exclamation marks ( ! ), (3) interjections with repeated consonants, 4) interjections with repeated vowel letters, (5) interjections with the final consonant ‘w’ which had not been used in the Thai language, and (6) interjections with other symbols at the end of the words which could be further categorized into 6.1) the use of the period symbol ( . ), 6.2) the use of the Thai repetition symbol ( ๆ ), and 6.3) the use of the tilde symbol ( ~ ). And, Trends of Thai interjections used in online media, It was found that forms of interjections was interjections with no exclamation marks ( !) which were used the most. Nevertheless, it was interesting that Thai interjections used by the Gen Y group in online media were freely expressed without taking into account the grammatical correctness of the exclamation mark (!) used at the end of expressions such as the interjections with repeated consonants and vowel letters, the use of the other symbol or the use of numbers to show humor.
