Concepts and Art in Language Use in The Novel, Krongkam

Abstract

This research aims to study concept and art in language use in the novel, KrongKam. Findings showed that the author presented four important concepts as follows. Firstly, the concept of love consisted of the love of mother and children, the love of siblings, the love of husband and wife, and the love of young people. Secondly, the concept of living a life was presented by the author showing the struggles for having morality in living a life. Thirdly, the concept of Buddhism was reflected by the author concerning the law of karma through characters receiving the results of their own actions. The truth of life was shown as the uncertainly in human life. Humans face constant change. Lastly, the concept of the power of sacred beings was reflected by the author in the beliefs in black magic, the talisman, and vows. All of these are important factors for human beings in society everywhere and in all periods.

The aspect of language use found three kinds of outstanding use of language. Firstly, the use of words found repetitive words, the use of foreign words in Chinese and English, and the use of epigrams. The objectives were to transfer the emotions and feelings of the characters to be more outstanding. In addition, the readers gained knowledge of society and culture. Secondly, the use of expressions found the use of various expressions. The author used expressions to compare the characters’ incidents, characters’ actions, and characters’ ideas. Lastly, in the use of figures of speech, four types of outstanding figures of speech were found. (1) Simile: the author used simile at the highest level. (2) Metaphor: the author used metaphor in the comparison of characters. (3) Hyperbole: the author used hyperbole in statements. (4) Allusion: the author alluded to the songs of well-known singers and important persons. The author used figures of speech to ensure that the readers see a clear picture.
