TECHNIQUES OF THE DETECTIVE NOVEL IN QIPHAO

Abstract

This study examines the literary strategies used to create an investigative novel called Qiphao. This study uses documentary research and analytical description to present the findings in details. The purposes of this study are (1) to explore strategies used to structure this investigative novel, and (2) to analyze the roles of each character in Qiphao. In this study, the researcher has critically examined the different components of this novel including the beginning, the middle, the core ideas of the story, the characters, the conflicts within the story (the conflict between humans and the conflict between human and society), and the end.

            From this study, I have found that the author of Qiphao has structured its storyline from the beginning to the ending. Qiphao opens the novel with a striking introduction of the main characters by remarkably highlights their education, talents, as well as family history and social class. This literary device effectively grabs the readers’ attention and excites their curiosity to continue reading the story from the beginning to the end. Moreover, the author gradually unfolds the themes of mystery and skepticism throughout the novel, in addition to presenting the conflict between humans and that between humans and society.
