Abstract

Abstract

In this research report, various aspects of forbidden love, which are a central motif in Lilit Phra Lo and Gottfried von Strassburg's Tristan, are comparatively summarized. Despite the different cultures, the results show predominantly similarities: The love relationship between the protagonists in both works is considered sexual misconduct. However, their love is caused by supernatural forces which they cannot resist. This justifies their immoral actions. Nevertheless, these actions still seem wrong and, together with the involvement of the antagonist, ultimately lead to a tragic ending.

From this study, it can be observed that love is a universal emotion. Furthermore, the perception of wrongdoing in two different cultures is similar. From this, one can conclude that cultural comparison should not only focus on differences but also consider similarities.
