Abstract

Thailand is currently facing a savings crisis in which the majority of individuals hold positive attitudes toward saving yet struggle to translate these intentions into actual behavior, reflecting a phenomenon known as the "Intention-Action Gap." This challenge is particularly evident among Generation Y and Generation Z, cohorts that have grown up alongside digital financial applications. This research aimed to: 1) examine personal factors influencing saving behavior; 2) analyze user responses to nine forms of digital financial nudges; and 3) investigate the effects of attitudes and technology acceptance on saving behavior. A quantitative research design was employed, collecting data from 406 participants (comprising 204 from Generation Y and 202 from Generation Z) through an online scenario-based questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that while participants held highly positive attitudes toward saving, they simultaneously exhibited present-biased behavior, reflecting a clear intention-action gap. Regarding digital financial nudge, reward and incentive mechanism demonstrated the highest effectiveness, whereas social comparison nudges received the lowest responsiveness. Technology acceptance emerged as the strongest predictor of saving behavior. Generational comparisons indicated that Generation Y displayed greater consistency in saving habits, whereas Generation Z showed stronger tendencies toward goal setting and the use of digital saving tools. These findings suggest that financial institutions should design user-friendly choice architectures, leverage automation to reduce decision-making burden, and implement reward mechanisms to foster sustainable financial discipline.
