Abstract

The aviation industry has grown rapidly across the ASEAN region, prompting airlines to adjust their strategies to cope with intensifying competition. This study aimed to examine competition through flight scheduling and to measure airline concentration across domestic routes in five ASEAN countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Data was collected in September 2025, covering 101 routes and a total of 1,118 flights. The routes were categorized based on scheduling competition and airline concentration. The study also analyzed the role of airline concentration in relation to scheduling competition. The results showed that, on average, domestic routes in Indonesia had the highest level of scheduling competition, while domestic routes in the Philippines had the highest airline concentration. Most domestic routes in ASEAN exhibited high scheduling competition and low airline concentration. In addition, regression analysis indicated that routes with higher airline concentration and higher flights frequency resulted in decreased scheduling competition. These findings can serve as valuable guidelines for both airports and airlines to plan and manage aviation resources more efficiently.
