The realisation of a fully-fledged ASEAN Community would depend on a long-standing practice of ASEAN, known as, the “ASEAN Way”. It consists of three major principles, namely, the principle of respect for national sovereignty, the principle of non-interference, and the principle of consensus. However, due to an alteration of circumstances surrounding ASEAN, the question then arises whether the traditional ASEAN Way will hinder ASEAN from moving towards a deeper regional integration, which requires closer economic, socio-cultural and political-security cooperation from all the member states. Therefore, this article aims to present the key principles of the “ASEAN Way”, as well as interesting remarks concerning the “ASEAN Way” and the ASEAN Community for the study of English for Lawyers.
