The Effects of Using SQ5R Reading Teaching Strategies and Authentic Materials to Promote the Reading Comprehension Abilities of Grade 12 Students

Abstract

The research explores the effects of using SQ5R reading teaching strategies and authentic materials to promote the reading comprehension abilities of grade 12 students. The purposes of this research were to: 1) compare the reading comprehension skills of grade 12 students before and after the learning of the SQ5R strategy with authentic materials and 2) study the students’ satisfaction towards using the SQ5R reading teaching strategies and authentic materials.


The sample, selected by a cluster random sampling technique, comprised 40 of grade 12 students during the first semester of academic year 2024. The research tools used in this study included the following: 1) 3 lesson plans with SQ5R reading strategies and authentic material; 2) A reading comprehension test, used as both pre- and post-tests; and 3) A student satisfaction questionnaire assessing attitudes towards the SQ5R reading strategies and authentic material. The paired-sample t-test was used to analyze the students’ reading comprehension skills.


The results of the study were as follows:


  1. The students’ reading comprehension skills after using SQ5R reading teaching strategies and authentic materials were significantly higher at the 0.05 level.

2. The students’ satisfaction towards using SQ5R reading teaching strategies and authentic materials was at the high level.
