Thai Constitutionalism and Citizenship as a Part of the Global Intellectual History of Modern Republicanism (1885-1932)

This research project traces and examines the formation of constitutionalism and citizenship in Siam/Thailand as a part of the global intellectual history of modern republicanism. Adopting the global intellectual history approach, it aims to examine constitutionalism and citizenship between the publishing of the 1885 Appeal to the King and the Revolution of 1932 and its aftermaths. This research paper contends that the intellectual history of constitutionalism reveals the connection between the period in question with the contemporary global revolutionary-reform waves via the study of the relations between constitutionalism and modern republicanism. In so doing, it demonstrates the possibilities to put the development of citizenship, rights and political responsibility in Siam/Thailand in the global intellectual history context.
