Abstract

This study aimed to explore the coping strategies employed by family caregivers in providing care for older adults with depression. A qualitative study using a phenomenological approach was conducted to capture caregivers lived experiences. Fifteen primary family caregivers of older adults diagnosed with depression who attended the psychiatric outpatient department at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital were purposively recruited. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews and analyzed using systematic content and contextual analysis to identify recurring themes and meanings embedded in participants' experiences.

The findings revealed five major coping strategies adopted by family caregivers: (1) seeking knowledge and understanding about depression and its treatment;                      (2) adapting caregiving practices and communication to accommodate patients' emotional conditions and functional limitations; (3) managing personal emotions and psychological distress; (4) expressing emotions and seeking support from family members and significant others; and (5) maintaining positive perspectives while accepting the realities of the illness. Caregivers actively sought information regarding depressive symptoms, treatment options, and medication management to reduce uncertainty and improve caregiving confidence. They also modified communication styles, closely monitored patients' emotional changes, encouraged participation in meaningful and relaxing activities, and relied on emotional regulation strategies, social support networks, and cognitive reframing to sustain their caregiving role. The findings suggest that family caregivers employ both problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies in response to the complex demands of caring for older adults with depression. These coping processes are dynamic and interconnected, integrating practical problem-solving, emotional regulation, social support, and positive adaptation. The findings provide valuable evidence for developing caregiver support programs, psychoeducational interventions, and mental health services that strengthen caregivers' resilience and promote sustainable, high-quality care for older adults with depression.
