บทความนี้มีเป้าหมายสองประการคือ หนึ่ง ศึกษาชนชั้นกลางกรุงเทพฯ ที่เป็นผู้สนับสนุนขบวนการพันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตย (พธม.) และขบวนการคณะกรรมการประชาชนเพื่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงปฏิรูปประเทศไทยให้เป็นประชาธิปไตยที่สมบูรณ์อันมีพระมหากษัตริย์ทรงเป็นประมุข (กปปส.) นั้นคือใคร มีลักษณะทางเศรษฐกิจสังคมอย่างไร และพวกเขามีทัศนะหรือค่านิยมที่ยึดมั่นในระบอบประชาธิปไตยหรือไม่ อย่างไร สอง ปรับใช้ทฤษฎีการทำให้เป็นสมัยใหม่ (modernization theory) ทำความเข้าใจว่า เหตุใดพวกเขาจึงไม่ยึดมั่นในระบอบประชาธิปไตย เพื่อโต้แย้งว่าแนวคิดในสายนี้ หากตีความใหม่ ยังคงมีประโยชน์ในการเข้าใจบทบาทของชนชั้นกลางกับการเปลี่ยน (ไม่) ผ่านสู่ระบอบประชาธิปไตย
