Plagiarism Policy Statement

The Chulalongkorn University Journal of Social Science is committed to maintaining high academic and ethical standards in publishing research. We have established a clear plagiarism policy to guide authors, reviewers, and the editorial board in upholding these standards.

Definition of Plagiarism

Plagiarism refers to the use of others' work or ideas without appropriate attribution or presenting them as one's own. This includes:

  • Direct copying of text without citation
  • Presenting others' ideas without referencing the source
  • Paraphrasing content while maintaining the original meaning without proper citation
  • Self-plagiarism (reusing one's previously published work without appropriate citation)
  • Using data, tables, figures, or charts from other sources without permission or citation

Plagiarism Detection Process

Our journal utilizes the ThaiJO system for managing academic articles, which is integrated with the CopyCatch plagiarism detection software (https://www.copycatch.in.th/) to screen all submitted manuscripts.

  • All articles submitted through the ThaiJO system will be automatically checked by the CopyCatch program
  • The system will check for similarity against academic literature databases within Thailand
  • Checked articles will receive a report showing the percentage of similarity with other documents
  • The editorial board will review these reports to assess the nature and extent of any similarity

Similarity Assessment Criteria

  • Articles with similarity below 10% – Generally proceed to the regular peer review process
  • Articles with similarity between 10-20% – Will undergo detailed examination by the editorial board to assess the nature of the similarity
  • Articles with similarity above 20% – May be rejected without peer review or returned to authors for revision before entering the review process
  • Note: Proper citations, technical terminology, or common phrases in the specific field may not be counted in the similarity percentage, subject to editorial discretion.

Penalties for Plagiarism

  • If detected before publication:
    • Return the manuscript to authors for revision and proper citation (for minor similarity issues)
    • Immediate rejection of the manuscript (for significant similarity)
    • Suspension of the author from submitting articles for a specified period (for intentional plagiarism)
  • If detected after publication:
    • Retraction of the article from the journal
    • Notification to the author's institution regarding the plagiarism
    • Banning the author from submitting to the journal for a specified period

Author Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that submitted manuscripts are original and have not been published elsewhere
  • Properly citing all sources of information, ideas, or work used according to academic standards
  • Obtaining permission to use copyrighted data, tables, images, or charts from the original owners
  • Disclosing research funding sources or potential conflicts of interest

Appeals Process

Authors may appeal to the editorial board if they believe the plagiarism determination is incorrect. Clear evidence must be provided to support such appeals. The editorial board will review the appeal and communicate their decision within 30 working days.
