สภาวะหลังบูรพคดีศึกษานิยมในการตีความชายแดนไทยลาว จากปี ค.ศ.1954-2019

ในประเด็นชายแดนไทยลาว ลักษณะการอ่านพื้นที่แบบบูรพคดีนิยมยังปรากฏให้เห็นชัดในหมู่นักวิชาการและผู้กำหนดนโยบายรัฐ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งลักษณะความเหนือกว่าของความรู้แบบตะวันตก การอ้างถึงความเป็นกลางของความรู้นั้น การแยกพื้นที่และผู้คนออกจากกัน และการจัดการพื้นที่เพื่อการป้อนนโยบายชาตินิยมให้กับรัฐ การอ่าน และเขียนพื้นที่ชายแดนแบบเวสต์ฟาเลียได้รับการยอมรับ โดยชนชั้นนำท้องถิ่นและนำไปปฏิบัติผสมผสานกับวิถีปฏิบัติดั้งเดิมจนอาจกล่าวได้ว่ามีลักษณะเป็นการอ่านพื้นที่แบบบูรพคดีนิยมมือสอง ตั้งแต่ลาวได้รับเอกราชในปี ค.ศ. 1954 จนปัจจุบัน บทความฉบับนี้เรียกลักษณะผสมเช่นนี้ว่าภาวะหลังบูรพคดีนิยม เพราะไม่สามารถแยกแยะได้ว่าการอ่านพื้นที่แบบใดเป็นบูรพคดีนิยมและแบบใดไม่ใช่ การอ่านและการนำแนวคิดเชิงพื้นที่แบบเวสต์ฟาเลียไปปฏิบัติที่มีลักษณะผสมผสานกันกับบริบทในท้องถิ่น ซึ่งสามารถสังเกตได้จากนำการเขียน การตีความ และการนำการตีความนั้นไปปฏิบัติโดยบรรดาตัวแสดงทางการเมืองต่าง ๆ ทั้งผู้คนในท้องถิ่น นักธุรกิจ เจ้าหน้าที่รัฐ หรือแม้กระทั่งนักวิชาการทางด้านประวัติศาสตร์ มานุษยวิทยา ภูมิศาสตร์ รัฐศาสตร์ และความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศ
