Abstract

This research aims to develop a social entrepreneurial ecosystem in Thai universities. Qualitative research methods were employed, namely in-depth and semi-structured interviews with stakeholders in the ecosystem, focusing on both policy and practice as well as the supporting factors in the environment. The findings are that the ecosystem that stands to promote social entrepreneurship in Thai universities should be one with linkages between value chains that are as complex as that in the ecological ecosystems, ie. such that the components and factors that perform different roles are related such that they become interdependent. These need to be integrated in a balanced way, through integrating social entrepreneurship issues into the curricula, the carrying out of research projects that promote social entrepreneurship, the establishment of research networks that operate as mechanisms for creating social impacts through social entrepreneurs, the provision of coaching and mentoring, the seeking of support from the public and private sectors, access to funds, the creation of space for working together such that social entrepreneurship is encouraged. However, at the heart of the social entrepreneurial ecosystem in Thai universities is human capital, as the originator, mobilizer, and promoter of social entrepreneurship.
