local decentralization to localities, localism, public choice theory, mobilization modelAbstract
The objectives of this research were to study and critique the body of theoretical knowledge concerning decentralization to localities in Thailand as well as to recommend research agendas and methodologies to be used in the future. The findings showed that there were five contemporary theories concerning decentralization to localities in Thailand as follows: mainstream old localism, new localism, radical localism, public choice theory and mobilization model. These models have strengths and weakness, so the next-step in research concerning decentralization to localities should integrate research agendas from these models, namely, institutional design, community network governance, community capacity, local fiscal autonomy and empowered participatory governance. In addition, transdisciplinary methodology should be used in the future.
