วัฒนธรรมที่มีกลิ่น: การสำรวจกลิ่นหอม การปรุงน้ำหอม และมิติทางสังคมของกลิ่น

บทความนี้ เริ่มจากการตั้งคำถามว่า สังคมต่าง ๆ ให้ความหมายกับกลิ่นอย่างไร กลิ่นสร้างปฏิสัมพันธ์ทางสังคมอย่างไร และเชื่อมโยงกับประสบการณ์ของมนุษย์ที่ซับซ้อนอย่างไร จากนั้นสำรวจความเป็นไปได้ของคำตอบผ่านการทำความเข้าใจพลวัตของกลิ่น บทความแบ่งเป็นห้าส่วน โดยส่วนแรก เป็นการกล่าวถึงกลิ่น ในฐานะผัสสะที่ (เคย) ถูกหลงลืม คุณลักษณะและการทำงานของผัสสะด้านกลิ่นของมนุษย์ในการรับรู้กลิ่น ส่วนที่สอง เป็นการสำรวจพัฒนาการทางการศึกษากลิ่น อันนำมาสู่การศึกษาที่ใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยทางมานุษยวิทยาอย่างเป็นระบบ ส่วนที่สาม ตรวจสอบน้ำหอมประเภทต่าง ๆ โดยสรุปคุณลักษณะ ส่วนประกอบทางเคมี และวิธีการที่ใช้อธิบายคุณลักษณะและกระบวนการเหล่านี้ ส่วนที่สี่ ย้อนทบทวนประวัติศาสตร์แบบย่นย่อของน้ำหอม ส่วนที่ห้าส่วนสุดท้าย กล่าวถึงสิ่งที่เรียกว่า วัฒนธรรมกลิ่นหอม บทความนี้เสนอว่า วัฒนธรรมกลิ่นหอมและน้ำหอมให้ความกระจ่างถึงความสัมพันธ์อันมีพลวัตระหว่างกลิ่นและสังคม โลกแห่งกลิ่นจึงสมควรได้รับความสนใจและการวิเคราะห์ในเชิงวิชาการมากขึ้น เพื่อให้เข้าใจคุณค่าของประสบการณ์ที่หลากหลายของมนุษย์มากขึ้น
