There are 3 objectives of this research. Firstly, what are the roles of ethnicity influencing the economic growth in Mae Sai border, Chiang Rai Province. Secondly, what are the inter-connected network relations among ethnic minority groups. Finally, what are factors affecting social integration in the border areas. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used in this research. Results revealed that at Mae Sai’s border in Chiang Rai Province, there are several ethnic groups comprised of Tai Kern, Tai Yai, Tai Lue, and Yunnan-Chinese. The Yunan-Chinese has influenced economic growth in Mae Sai district more than other ethnic groups. All minority groups are intra- and interconnected in terms of socio-cultural activities, and among relatives and friends for their safety and security. The research found that the ethnic minority groups in Mae Sai can be integrated and assimilated not only within and among themselves but also with local Thai people. All ethnic minority groups in Mae Sai play a variety of roles in the border economic development.
