Bresnan เขียนหนังสือเล่มนี้เพื่อเล่าประสบการณ์ของการเข้ามาทำงานร่วมกับมูลนิธิฟอร์ดและการทำงานในอินโดนีเซีย เขาทำงานติดต่อใกล้ชิดกับอินโดนีเซียอยู่นานจนได้รับรางวัล Distinguished Service Star (Bintang Jasa Pratama) จากประธานาธิบดีเมกาวาตี ซูการ์โนบุตรี (Megawati Sukarnoputri) เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2003 ในฐานะที่เป็นชาวอเมริกันที่ทำหน้าที่ประสานความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสหรัฐอเมริกากับอินโดนีเซีย (Bresnan 2006, 1)
หนังสือเล่มนี้เล่าประสบการณ์ส่วนบุคคลของ Bresnan โดยพยายามตอบคำถามหลักที่ประกอบไปด้วย ทำไมมูลนิธิฟอร์ดเข้าไปให้ความช่วยเหลือในอินโดนีเซียหลายปี ทำไมมูลนิธิฟอร์ดให้พนักงานอยู่ในอินโดนีเซีย และจัดตั้งโครงสร้างองค์กรของมูลนิธิแตกต่างไปจากมูลนิธิอื่น ๆ ที่เป็นของอเมริกา ตัวแทนของมูลนิธิฟอร์ดเข้าไปทำอะไรในอินโดนีเซีย มันคุ้มค่าอย่างนั้นหรือ และผู้เขียนจะกลับไปทำหน้าที่นั้นอีกครั้งหรือไม่หากมีโอกาส (Bresnan 2006, 2)
