At the Borders of Subregional South Asia and ASEAN: A Look at India-Myanmar Connectivity for “Forging Ahead Together

Cooperation between ASEAN and India, and the development process within the India, have led India to accelerate the development of the northeast border region of the country, particularly along the India-Myanmar Border in order to physically connect to ASEAN via the Trilateral Highway linking India-Myanmar-Thailand. This qualitative social science research investigates the ongoing travel links between India and ASEAN. If focuses on the border between the two regions and explores basic information in terms of society and economy in the area though documentary research and field work in India. The results indicate that progress is being made and India is preparing to open the country to ASEAN through Manipur. The other borders however remain open only to local traders and do not yet serve as full-scale international crossing points, an issue that needs the attention of both India and Myanmar to ensure maximum connectivity. The results of this study are expected to better enhance understanding of ASEAN and India relations and to contribute to Thailand’s preparations for the opening of the Trilateral Highway.
