Abstract

This article aims to present the possibility of bringing sociological perspectives of using structure and actor/agency to explain self-broadcasting by live-streaming suicide and suicide attempts through social media. The analysis found that social media could be both a channel and a part of the social spheres of online social networks. The relationships among social media users are difficult to be typified because of their weak ties. Although there are some regulations for controlling or organizing those relations like actual society, advanced technology of social media application makes the structure in virtual society one that allows social media users as agencies to obtain data and to contact others without limitations of time and space. Thus, they are free to produce and broadcast their desired identities, including by live-streaming suicide/suicide attempts. Consequently, due to the convergence of structure and agency dimensions in the phenomenon, using structuration theory for explaining the phenomenon is appropriate. This is because the theory views structure and agency together.
