Since her independence in 1947, India has always faced security challenges. Among all these, various forms of insurgencies in or related to Kashmir, Punjab, North-East and Naxalites are the largest threats undermining India’s national security. This paper serves to answer the research question: what are India’s counterinsurgency approaches in relation to Kashmir? This paper also argues that (1) the Kashmir issue is essentially shaped by external factors which makes it complex for India to solve, and (2) India’s counterinsurgency approaches in Kashmir are a combination in line with both traditional and human security frameworks, different from the academic perception which tends to completely separate the two frameworks from each other. This paper is divided into three parts. The first part delineates the development of insurgency in Kashmir. The second part explains the counterinsurgency approaches adopted by India. The last part concludes the paper and ends with some implications.
