Tourism Development Sustainable Floating Markets, on the Basis of Identity and Community Participation: a Case Study of the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in Ratchaburi Province

Abstract

This qualitative research aimed to study the identities of aid the demands on Damnoen Saduak floating market in order to propose tourism development guidelines. In-depth interviews and focus groups were conducted on a sample of 20 persons selected by snowballing and purposive methods. They were member of the community-entrepreneurs and government officials. 32 tourists were also accidentally sample for interviewing. The result therefrom were analyzed to arrive at the main points. It was found that the identity of Damnoen Saduak varied according to time periods: 1) an agrarian community dependent on water transport; 2) a floating market community for tourism of the local people’s way of life; and 3) a floting market community for fully-fledge tourism. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market thus came to be subject to the different demands of the tourists, the entrepreneurs and government officials.  It is recommended that tourism development for sustainability at Damnoen Saduak Floating Market be divided into short-term, medium-term and long-term activities
